Year C. 3rd Term. Lesson 4. Bible Buddy: Isaiah

Scripture: for teacher background:  Isaiah 6

Making contact:

Talk about nice dreams that we have.
Don’t get too involved with long stories.
Explain that a vision is a dream, but you are wide-awake, and it is from God to tell you something.

Lots of people in the Bible had visions and today people still get messages from God like this.

 Exploration:

Isaiah was one of Judah’s greatest prophets. He was not only a preacher but also an advisor to the kings of Judah.
Prophets were quite unpopular because they spoke out against sin and people didn’t like their sin to be pointed out!
Not only did he speak about the things that were happening then in Judah, but he also spoke about the future.

He spoke about when the Saviour Jesus would come and die for our sins. We have a record of all those words he spoke. They are written in the book called Isaiah.

Read to the children these verses from
Isaiah 7   Therefore the Lord will give you a sign – The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel.”

Isaiah 9 “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light……….for to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder and he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, prince of Peace.”

Isaiah 53
We despised him and rejected him, he endured suffering and pain…but he endured the suffering that should have been ours…because of our sins he was wounded, beaten because of the evil we did. We are healed because of the punishment he suffered, made whole by the blows he received. All of us were like sheep that were lost, each of us going his own way………..He was treated harshly, but endured it humbly, and he never said a word. Like a lamb about to be slaughtered……….He was arrested and sentenced and led off to die. He was put to death for the sins of our people. He was buried with the rich…he will bear the punishment of many.”

One day Isaiah was in the temple and he had a magnificent vision.

He saw the Lord on a high, raised throne and the hem of his gown reached down into the temple.
All around him were angels and they were saying very loudly “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God of the universe; the heavens and the earth are full of His glory."

The angels were flying with 2 wings, with 2 wings they covered their feet and 2 wings covered their faces. When he saw this vision, Isaiah felt terrible.

He felt so sinful and he cried out that he was lost, yet he had seen the glory of the Lord. When he prayed this, one of the angels flew towards him with a burning coal. He touched Isaiah’s lips with it. Isaiah understood that he was now ready to speak God’s message.

When he heard God’s voice saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for me?” Isaiah replied “Here I am Lord, Send me.”

 Application

What do we usually say when someone asks who should they send?
We say, “Send someone else! I am too busy, too tired, too small, too fat, too lazy, too nervous, too young, too old………..etc.”

When God asked Moses to go back to Egypt he said he couldn’t speak properly send Aaron. Someone called this the 'Moses wriggle'
.
Are you going to wriggle or say: “Yes, send me.”

It helped that Isaiah had seen that amazing vision of God. Maybe we will be more willing to serve God if we get to know Him better and love Him more.

 Challenge to Mission

Is God calling you to serve Him in some way? Ask Him what He’d like you to do.

 Consolidation

There is a worksheet with a picture of God on the throne and baby Jesus at the bottom with the prophecy from Isaiah 9:6. There is a prayer to fill in and a memory verse.

 Memory Verse

“I saw the Lord. He was sitting on His throne, high and above and His robe filled the temple.” Isaiah 6:1

Print the memory verse on cards with pictures of angels.
